SerVermont - Capstone Community Action

Capstone Community Action helps individuals and families rise out of poverty. We take a whole-family, often multi-generational approach, providing comprehensive wrap-around supports guided by three overarching priorities: stabilizing lives; nurturing child & family development; and building resilient households and communities. Often our first steps are providing supports to create stability in a household, critical to pursuing and achieving long term goals. These include providing emergency food, heating, housing assistance and homelessness intervention. This broad array of services, including Early Head Start, Micro-Business Development, and Weatherization, meets people where they are and helps them get where they want to go. Our commitment is to alleviate the suffering caused by poverty, work with individuals and families to move out of poverty, and advocate for economic justice for all Vermonters. We do this every day by working to help families and individuals move forward. Solving short term crisis is only the beginning. Once guests are stable, our Community Economic Development teams work to improve their financial situations, employment opportunities, and credit scores. There is no “one size fits all” solution for a household in poverty. In every interaction with our guests, we strive to empower them with tools and information they require to be successful in these difficult times. Inspiring a vision for the future is often the most important tool we provide. We are a leader in the fight against economic injustice in our community, based on decades of advocacy and innovative programs. We have a robust network of partners equally committed to creating opportunities for those living in poverty. Our experience in the area makes it easy for us to help those unable or unfamiliar with navigating the complex social service system.

Member Duties : Capstone’s housing programs offer many options for their customers but we have few effective ways to determine the program’s long term success. Our VISTA will assess these programs to determine their effectiveness. They will develop and create a survey process to review files, contact past customers, interview them to update their status, and identify possible reasons for consumers’ ability or inability to maintain housing. Are they still housed? Are they in the same place as they were when they completed the program? Are they current on their rent? Are they employed? These and other questions to be developed will give us the information we need to expand or modify our systems. The final report will be the foundation for future projects and programs. This is a unique opportunity to examine one of our country’s most pressing issues at a cellular level and help craft real solutions. Due to the rural nature of Capstone's service area, a reliable vehicle is required.
