Strong City/Crossroads Community Food Network

Crossroads Community Food Network is building a healthier, more inclusive food system in Maryland’s Takoma/Langley Crossroads. Crossroads works to bolster the local food system through programs that support and unite those who grow, make, and eat fresh, healthy food. At the heart of this integrated network of food growers, makers, and consumers is Crossroads Farmers Market, where Fresh Checks make healthy food more affordable in Maryland’s International Corridor. Crossroads’ Healthy Eating initiatives bring farm-to-fork programming to the community, and our Microenterprise Training Program connects potential food business entrepreneurs with community resources, mentorship, and skills development–further improving community food security by bringing more affordably priced foods into the local market. This position is sponsored by Strong City Baltimore in Baltimore, MD; and the VISTA member will serve with Crossroads Community Food Network in Takoma Park, MD. Strong City sponsors 30 VISTA projects at nonprofit, government, and community organizations throughout Baltimore City and Maryland. Established in 1969 to help neighborhoods become safer, better places to live, Strong City's mission is to build and strengthen neighborhoods and people. Strong City will provide support to Crossroads Community Food Network and the VISTA member throughout the year, including recruitment, training, resources, and professional development opportunities, and meetings.

Member Duties : The VISTA will: create a “Grow Our Food Business Guide” providing a roadmap for food entrepreneurs in our training programs to easily access the support they need in order to build a successful business. This resource, which will be used by the organization well beyond the VISTA term, will be designed as a financial literacy and business planning tool tailored for small food entrepreneurs, farmers, and producers. 1. conduct outreach to the local community; 2. develop communication tools and systems; 3. coordinate focus groups and needs assessments; 4. build and formalize relationships with partner organizations; 5. produce a physical guide to these services that can be used well beyond the term of service.
