Food Secure High Point

High Point University (HPU) seeks to host eight VISTAs and a VISTA leader to improve education and food security in High Point. Four VISTAs will work on food security. All VISTAs live in houses owned and maintained by HPU. All VISTAs also receive a 19 meal dining plan during the academic year. The VISTAs have individual placements in the City of High Point, but we meet weekly for check-ins and do professional development together. HPU supports some conference travel. Food Security VISTAs will divide up several key tasks: 1. Promote and develop community gardens throughout High Point. 2. Expand the farmers market options in the city. 3. Develop a fresh food market. 4. Improve food education in High Point by marketing healthy food options and developing nutrition and cooking classes. 5. Expand HPU’s food recovery efforts. 6. Develop shared use kitchens and healthy corner store options. This project needs VISTAs who bring skills like: community-building, research, marketing, networking, project development, and public speaking. VISTAs recruited into this project will be placed with the site that best meets their skills, interests, and qualifications. This project will offer VISTAs the chance to start something new. They will get to envision a project from the ground up, build community ownership, engage volunteers, and see their idea into reality. After finishing the project year, VISTAs will be well-prepared for the job market. They will have clear “wins,” tangible examples of their leadership, and strong references who are ready to speak to the impact they have made. This project is perfect for someone wanting to get involved in the health professions, public health, community development, non-profit management, public administration, or communications. This project will run from August 3, 2020-August 2, 2021. For more information, contact Rev. Mary Beth Foust at mfoust@highpoint.edu or Dr. Joe Blosser at jblosser@highpoint.edu.
