Sharing Life Community Outreach

Sharing Life exists to demonstrate compassion to the poor, hungry, hurting and hopeless in our community. We provide a myriad of services to meet the basic needs of our community. We have a client choice food pantry with a wide variety of items, differing from week to week. We also participate in the PAN/CSFP for senior citizens. We offer a full Clothing Closet, including household items, personal care, and hygiene items. We also provide prescription assistance, as available, and durable medical equipment. Dallas County partners with us and provides emergency electric/natural gas assistance. Sharing Life also partners directly with TXU and Atmos to assist clients with bills. We have on-site assistance with SNAP applications. The above are every day services. We also have special programs for “Back to School”, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Sharing Life also has Health Profession Pathway. This is a full Integrated Service Delivery Program. The program includes education, job training in entry level health occupations, Financial Capability Training with coaching and financial support. In collaboration with El Centro College, students may enroll in a Certified Nurse’s Assistant, Phlebotomy Technician, or Community Healthcare Worker program. Each of these paths, leads to a state certification for a more marketable job skill, in an attempt to move people out of poverty. With one of these certificates, the client has the potential to make an hourly wage ranging from $12 - $16. The Financial Capabilities training teaches the student about their credit history, credit score, banking, emergency savings, spending plans and goals. Giving the students the ability to understand how their income can work for them. We support these students with our regular services to ensure they have what they need to stay in the program until completion.

Member Duties : Sharing Life has been in partnership with El Centro for several years. We have offered CNA courses, Phlebotomy, and Clinical Healthcare Worker certification. We have seen the success of the students in the program earning their certificates, but unfortunately have not done much research or analysis of the outcomes. Our VISTA will be in charge of creating a system to capture and analyze information from our integrated service delivery program. The outcomes we are focusing on are employment and wages. Beyond creating the process, we need the VISTA to develop ways that we can use the information to enhance the program, and increase funding. The next step for this VISTA is to assist us in research and planning for expanding the educational and employment supports for the students and engaging employers to build economic opportunities.
