Good Neighbor Center VISTA (MLC)

Good Neighbor Center is a small nonprofit tutoring and mentoring program in St Paul next to the state capitol building. Our program started in 1999 tutoring at-risk youth one night a week. Since then, we have had building and name changes and have expanded to three nights a week (Mondays-Wednesdays, year round). We are a free program available to youth in Kindergarten through 12th grade. We serve dinner to our youth, their families and our volunteers from 6:30-7pm. At 7pm we break down into small groups and work with youth on understanding and completing their homework as well as practicing academic and socio-emotional skills. Having a quality relationship with our youth is the utmost importance. The vast majority of our youth come from immigrant and refugee families and English is their second, third and sometimes fourth language. Over the past few years, we have grown from a completely volunteer run organization to having one staff person and our average attendance per evening has grown from 20 youth to 40 plus on a given night. This growth has been wonderful and we now need to update our program. Our VISTA will have the opportunity to design, create, test and pilot a variety of projects. We have created an expansive list of projects that the VISTA will have the opportunity to lead and develop, such as: develop, design and enhance current and new curriculum with a focus on experiential learning opportunities; develop community partnerships to recruit volunteers and donors; create a tutor orientation and training program. Our projects are a great fit for a VISTA who is interested in working with a small nonprofit in the education sector and s/he will have the opportunity to join us as we grow from grassroots to a small organization.
