Summer Associate Program at Focus: HOPE Freedom Schools '17

FOCUS: HOPE MISSION - Recognizing the dignity and beauty of every person, we pledge intelligent and practical action to overcome racism, poverty, and injustice. And to build a metropolitan community where all people may live in freedom, harmony, trust and affection. Black and white, yellow, brown and red from Detroit and its suburbs of every economic status, national origin and religious persuasion we join in this covenant. The HOPE Village Initiative (HVI) is a long-term, comprehensive, place-based initiative designed to radically change the odds of success for children, their families and the neighborhoods immediately surrounding Focus: HOPE's campus. The HVI aims to ensure that by the year 2031, 100% of the residents in the service area will be educationally well-prepared, economically self-sufficient, and living in a safe and supportive environment. The HOPE Village Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom Schools are an important piece in the work of the HVI. The HOPE Village CDF Freedom Schools will implement the CDF Freedom Schools program, a research-based national model for reading and STEM enrichment. CDF Freedom Schools aim to educate strong, literate, and empowered children who are prepared to make a difference in themselves, their families, communities, nation and the world. Students participate in engaging, culturally relevant curricula that feature multicultural books and hands-on STEM activities. For six weeks in summer, 150 students will participate in full-day (8am-3pm) HOPE Village CDF Freedom Schools programming, which includes participation in three hours of reading enrichment and two hours of STEM enrichment each day, healthy meals and a snack, physical recreation time, and the energizing, affirming morning ceremony, Harambee.
