BCFS - Volunteer Program Developer (MAVA)

Over the last 35 years, the Bemidji Community Food Shelf has grown from a humble organization serving 19 families into a major hunger relief agency. We serve a community facing high rates of chronic poverty, unemployment, poor health outcomes and food insecurity. Last year, the food shelf provided services to 2,716 households. Nearly 50% of the individuals we serve are under the age of 18 and 63% are Native American. Like many food shelves, our greatest challenge is providing the fresh fruits and vegetables essential to good health. For this reason, BCFS piloted the Farm project in 2014 on 1.5 acres. Though this project has grown steadily for the last 3 years, we are looking to expand our impact in the community by building our volunteer program. Serving as our VISTA Volunteer Program Developer, you will help us expand our services, enhance our ability to engage and educate our volunteers and customers, and help ensure reliable access to healthy, fresh food resources in our community. If you seek a career in the nonprofit sector or volunteer management or just want to build program development skills in a way that gives back, this is a great opportunity for you. The food shelf is well-connected in the area, providing you with many opportunities to build relationships and your professional network. BCFS offers professional support, mentoring, a small professional development fund, and flexible hours. We can help facilitate housing arrangements if you are relocating for service and will connect you to other needed supports, including access to our food shelf services.
