Gerontology VISTA Member

The heart of the Great Plaines, South Dakota is a state with a rich history and a rugged beauty. South Dakota also has an aging, rural population which provides a unique opportunity to develop innovative approaches to the challenges that may accompany shifting demographics. To better serve the needs of poverty-stricken or rural adults, the VISTA member will work with stakeholders to improve opportunities for older adults to age in place, assist in the development of a positive aging curriculum, and increase knowledge and access to technology. This position offers the VISTA member professional experience and networking opportunities, while enhancing and extending the quality of life for South Dakotans.

Member Duties : This is the perfect opportunity for someone interested in pursuing a career in social work, gerontology, or attending graduate school. Work alongside SDSU Extension gerontologists to develop projects that increase knowledge and awareness of housing option and home modifications that would better allow individuals to age in place. Evaluate and monitor outputs, data analysis, outcome reporting, and other activities on effectiveness of projects. The member will also work to continue the marketing and recruitment to increase participation in programs for older adults, emphasizing rural and poverty stricken areas. Research activities and curriculum to better equip organizations that serve older adults with the tools to promote more holistic views on aging and understand the importance of purposeful aging.
