Department of Indian Work St Paul - Youth Enrichment (MLC)

Interfaith Action of Greater Saint Paul works to build an infrastructure of opportunity for people in Saint Paul by leading on-the-ground work and engaging community partners in order to make broad change. As a program of Interfaith Action, the Department of Indian Work is an indigenous space for American Indian families to revitalize culture, education, and wellness. Program services offered are: Food Shelf and Emergency Services, Diabetes Education and Prevention, and American Indian Youth Enrichment. The American Indian Youth Enrichment services approximately 80 American Indian students, grades 1 – 8, at the American Indian Magnet School (AIMS) afterschool and summer program in east Saint Paul. Students learn from indigenous leaders, gain awareness of their heritage and history, and receive culturally-relevant educational support. Through this work, we will have the long-term impact of seeing students gaining a strong indigenous identity, become advocates for their culture, and succeed in school. A Literacy VISTA serving in American Indian Youth Enrichment will be able to build program capacity by creating more family involvement, learning about and designing cultural curriculum, and develop skills in piloting and coordinating an American Indian High School Volunteer Program. Through this project, a VISTA will make a difference in developing students’ identity, resilience, and building the level of their supportive network for opportunities and success. Candidates must be knowledgeable in supporting communities that have experienced oppression and must be open to diverse perspectives. *Position is part of the MN Literacy Council VISTA cohort. Applications reviewed on rolling basis till filled. www.mnliteracy.org/americorps-vista
