Rural Renewable Energy Alliance Community Solar - Initiative

*Position filled on a rolling basis; apply today!* RREAL is a nonprofit in Central Minnesota founded in 2000 and dedicated to making solar power accessible to people of all income levels. Over 33 million American households struggle with energy poverty, forcing households to make difficult choices between home energy and other basic necessities, such as healthcare, housing or adequate nutrition. Currently, the federal Energy Assistance Program offers temporary relief to low-income families through bill assistance, but Energy Assistance costs billions of dollars annually without creating a long-term solution to energy poverty. Solar energy promises to permanently address energy poverty with a renewable solution, yet solar energy remains out of reach to many families. RREAL is working to integrate solar assistance into the energy assistance program. Our AmeriCorps VISTA will help expand our low-income community solar project. In 2016, we installed our first 100% low-income community solar project with the help of our first VISTA and in partnership with the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe. This array is serving 100 families and is integrated into the federal Energy Assistance Program. As part of the Department of Energy Solar in Your Community Challenge, RREAL is expanding this model statewide and across the United States. Our VISTA would be helping to expand this innovative model across the U.S. and build capacity for future projects. VISTA will also participate in exclusive monthly leadership and professional development trainings with cohort members serving in Central MN.

The VISTA will analyze past CS4CA installations to further develop program best practices, research and assemble other collaborators and resources required for continued project development and implementation, develop educational curriculum and materials so that youth and adults alike can learn about the model and energy poverty, and research and disseminate the model to interested stakeholders throughout the country.
