United Way of Story County VISTA Income Specialist
United Way of Story County (UWSC) focuses on three Education, Income and Health – the building blocks for a good quality of life. We are successful because of the partnerships and collaborations we form that help individuals and families succeed. In the area of Income, we understand that in order to create a strong community, individuals and families must have their basic needs met first. This includes a safe place to live, access to food and reliable transportation. Sadly, these are not realities for all of our neighbors. We also understand that individuals and families must be equipped with the skills and resources to help move them toward self-sufficiency, including job training and financial education and coaching. Much work has been done to address financial education and coaching for at-risk women through the Women with Initiative program but more could be done to support all low income families. AmeriCorps VISTA will help identify, assess, build and expand programs that provide free tax preparation for low income workers, financial education/coaching, and job skills/training. The VISTA Income Specialist will also be an integral part of this work by coordinating an effort to identify existing resources for, and the unmet needs of, the low-income community; increase community awareness; and seek effective solutions. The successful candidate will be an outgoing individual that has the ability to manage multiple responsibilities, understands how to communicate effectively with a variety of different stakeholders and exhibits a passion for wanting to help make poverty history.
