Ohio Latino Affairs Commission Development VISTA

The Ohio Latino Affairs Commission is a VISTA sub-site of the Latino Connection VISTA project, coordinated by the Ohio Hispanic Coalition. The Commission advises state government on issues affecting Hispanic Ohioans, connects Latino communities, and builds the capacity of community organizations to better serve the growing Latino population of Ohio. The organization is seeking an individual to support its outreach efforts and implement a social media strategy to increase effectiveness in programming and outreach as we strive to serve the Latino community in Ohio. Our work is implemented through three program offices. Through the Organizations Development Center, we BUILD the capacity of Latino community organizations, especially those of, for, and by Hispanic Ohioans, by applying for and accepting grants in partnership with organizations, subcontracting programs to local groups, and conducting education programs to enhance and strengthen community organization staff and leadership. By way of the Public Policy Center, we ADVISE the Governor, the Ohio General Assembly, and state government agencies on all matters affecting Hispanic Ohioans, by issuing reports, proposing programs, commenting on legislation, and conducting policy-related research. Through the Latino Community Network, we CONNECT the diverse Latino communities across the State of Ohio by serving as a hub of information for and about Hispanic Ohioans by hosting meetings, conducting surveys, promoting collaboration, encouraging communication, and endeavoring to assure access to decision-making bodies. Ohio’s Hispanic community is comprised of more than 383,000 people, accounting for 3.3 percent of the state’s total population. Since 2000 the number of Hispanic Ohioans has increased by 76 percent. The majority of Hispanic Ohioans live in urban areas of the state.
