Tribal VISTA: White Mountain Apache Tribe

Ndee Bikiyaa (The People’s Farm) is the White Mountain Apache Tribal farm for fruit and vegetable production. The farm is housed in the tribal Water Resources Department and is supervised by the Water Resources Director. The farm is run by two main staff: the farm manager and the greenhouse manager. The managers are supported by seasonal field staff and community outreach staff/interns, which generally change from year to year. The farm has office space within the Water Resources Department office building. Over 960 acres of land are reserved for agriculture by the tribal government. Currently, approximately four acres are used for fruit and vegetable production. The farm has one house used for storage and processing produce as well as a passive solar greenhouse, two hoop houses, and a covered outdoor space used for community events.

Member Duties : The VISTA will build stronger connections with other natural resource departments within the tribe and community partners outside of the tribe. The VISTA will research model programs and studies for more efficient and effective agricultural systems as well as gather relevant statistical data. The VISTA will seek funding from individuals, community resources, and grant funders to sustain outreach and education programs. In support of the farm team, the VISTA will contribute to the Ndee Bikiyaa sustainability plan. The VISTA will conduct a community assessment and gain community input throughout the term, which will be critical for creating the sustainability plan. Within the plan, Ndee Bikiyaa staff hope to create a business plan for farm produce sales and brainstorm other potential funding sources that can sustain the farm and its outreach programming. The VISTA will support farm operations and outreach programming as needed with a specific focus on resilient farming systems.
