VISTA SAReads Community Relations Coordinator

SAReads is a collective action project that specializes in delivering research-based programs including the SAReads® Literacy Academy and Book Bank. The Book Bank provides thousands of books to area teachers, schools and nonprofits. The Literacy Academy systematically increases children’s reading proficiency by training teachers to use science-based reading instruction (SBRI). The Academy also offers family engagement workshops and enrichment opportunities to help families strengthen their involvement at-home. In Fall 2017, the Literacy Academy will expand SBRI training to provide: Applied teaching experience to preservice teachers using intermediate reading instruction (4th and 5th grade) and professional development, coaching and instructional resources for practicing K-5 teachers. Our partner, Southwest ISD, provides facilities and support from principals, teachers and librarians, while 400 trained preservice teachers from Texas A&M-San Antonio tutor K- 5th grade students. Each student is tutored once per week over the 18-week period, coinciding with the academic year. Students receive books to take home prior to winter, spring and summer breaks for reading practice and to build home libraries. SAReads provides tutoring in 11 elementary schools. The students are assessed monthly by their teachers using IStation. SAReads receives assessment data from the school district for program assessment, lesson planning and student tracking. Furthermore, SAReads developed a custom portal to provide instructional recourses to preservice teacher as well as allow tutors and program administrators to monitor and analyze weekly student progress. Southwest ISD identified one school where SAReads will develop a prototype for embedding science-based instruction in the school culture. Every teacher at the school will receive SBRI training, coaching and instructional resources. The training is optimized for teacher retention of knowledge and use of information in the classroom.
