The MAPS Media Institute, based in Hamilton, MT is a nationally-recognized, local education agency and after-school academy in western Montana. MAPS programming incorporates science, technology, engineering, the arts and math (STEAM) in free-of-charge after-school/summer instruction which assists young people achieve tangible public success and impressive personal growth. Through courses in Film, Design, Music, Technology, and Entrepreneurship, MAPS students learn self-confidence, leadership and empathy for others, creating a strong foundation for the success of all their future endeavors. The goal of MAPS Works is to connect students to media arts and engage them in the community. MAPS partners with four Title 1 schools in Ravalli County. Over 60% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Students that attend quality after school programming make significant improvements socially and academically, resulting in improved grades and positive community engagement. Of note, 85% of MAPS students continue on to college, compared to the 60% average of the Bitterroot Valley.

Member Duties : The main purpose of the Summer Associate will be to build capacity for the MAPS summer media arts program. The MAPS 2020 Summer Associates will assist with STEAM based summer media arts program for 8th -12th grade students and with community outreach including staffing MAPS weekly Farmers Market table. Aiding MAPS production crew, the VISTA will help with several week-long intensive workshops about filmmaking focused primarily on Montana's Indian Reservations. Throughout the summer the VISTA will learn all facets of pre-production, production, and post production, practice the skills related to digital camera, audio recording equipment and video editing. In August the VISTA will distribute print enrollment packets and instructions for online enrollment to the school office managers and counselors.
