MTCC Missoula Parks and Rec REACH MORE Summer Program

The Parks and Recreation department in Missoula is running a 10 week inclusive summer camp for low income youth of all abilities. This camp puts in place the structural, staff, and financial supports needed to fully include youth with disabilities in all types of summer programming to mitigate summer learning loss through outdoor learning and recreation. Poverty affects people with disabilities at a greater rate than those without a disability. The 2015 census reports that the poverty rate for people with a broad disability was 28.5% as compared to people without a disability at 12.4%. Missoula Parks and Recreation works on advocacy and prevention as its primary approach to alleviating poverty. By providing recreation and wellness programs to youth with disabilities our goal is to enable our participants to gain social skills, job related skills, and self-advocacy to aid them in growing as community members. Vandell, Low, Reisner, & Pierce (2007) found that recreation and out of school programs directly lead to an increase in self-sufficiency, advocacy, and school related performance.
