Appalachian Center for Economic Networks Summer Associate

The Appalachian Food Chain Diversification Program VISTA position will provide capacity building support to a diverse partnership of non-profit economic development organizations, local food champions, farmers and producers working on solutions to healthy food access in rural Appalachia Ohio. This position will work with ACEnet staff to design evaluation, training and infrastructure support to provide specialty food & farming entrepreneurs with the resources, skills and strategies to start and grow their businesses into profitable operations that support sustainable livelihoods, while simultaneously increasing the diversity and safety in the local food economy. The target geographic area for this program includes 7 southeast counties identified as part of the Appalachian region including: Athens, Hocking, Jackson, Meigs, Morgan, Muskingum and Perry. These counties have been classified by the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) as either distressed, at risk or in transition. Many of these counties are also designated as USDA StrikeForce zones due to their persistent levels of poverty, low healthy food access and limited entrepreneurial support systems. Target counties are included for two primary reasons: they are economically distressed, and have robust pre-existing relationships with capacity builders who can assist food & farm entrepreneurs access markets, increase wholesale readiness and process value-added farm products.
