OSMRE VISTA Friends of Verde River Greenway
Friends was formed in 2007, by a group of local river conservationists and boaters, all committed to supporting the Verde River Greenway. The Greenway is a 35 mile stretch of the Verde River that runs through the communities of the Verde Valley, from the Tuzigoot Bridge in Clarkdale to Rockin’ River Ranch in Camp Verde. The communities that dot the Valley were established and economically sustained by mining from the 1880’s – the 1950’s. The economic and environmental effects of these legacy mining operations are still evident. The industrial impacts of mining in and around the Verde River helped solidified the nickname “the dirty Verde” for one of Arizona’s last free flowing river systems. For many years this reputation kept all of the communities of the Verde Valley from capitalizing on the environmental and economic potential that the Verde River holds. Over the last four years Friends of Verde River Greenway has been implementing boots-on-the-ground programs in the areas of riparian habitat and flow restoration, sustainable recreation and community outreach to help our communities thrive economically as a result of a healthy river system, changing the perception of the dirty Verde into the Purdy Verde. We have made progress, but there is still a great deal to be accomplished to ensure that the Verde River and the Verde Valley are treasured for their natural, cultural and recreational value into the future. Friends is committed to working collaboratively for a healthy Verde River that supports our local economy and rural quality of life.
