Barnstable County AmeriCorps Cape Cod - FireCorps
 
 
 
The Barnstable County AmeriCorps Cape Cod FireCorps initiative partners with the Cape Cod National Seashore Fire Management Office as well as local municipal departments of natural resource management and state conservation agencies. The six member FireCorps a component of the larger 32 member AmeriCorps Cape Cod group. The FireCorps will serve on labor intensive projects reducing fuels on public lands using a variety of hand tools, power tools, and prescribed application of fire. Through these service activities the members will assist with the Cape Cod National Seashore Fire Management Plan objectives which include: Firefighter and Public Safety, Using Fire to Protect, Manage and Enhance Park Resources, and Research the Effects of Fire. Service is accomplished in organizational units (squads) under the direction of the squad boss. Ability to work as part of a team and communicate internally and along the chain of command is required. Members attend daily briefings and after action reviews. Additionally members complete daily and weekly equipment, vehicle and facility maintenance. Members are on-call to respond to environmental and natural disasters like marine mammal strandings and regional shelter openings within Barnstable County. The Barnstable County AmeriCorps Cape Cod Program is an EOE. Member Duties : Corps members will serve on labor intensive outdoor service projects working as part of a team using a variety of hand and power tools to accomplish fuel reduction and prescribed burn activities. Service will be physically demanding- the position often involves walking over rough, steep and uneven terrain in all types of weather. Long service days may be required; temperatures are frequently extreme, both from weather and fire conditions; and the presence of smoke and dust may be severe. Daily use of power tools (chainsaws and brush cutters) is to be expected. Fire management work is hazardous and the AmeriCorps member must exercise a variety of safety practices and precautions for his/her own and other well-being. **If selected you must pass a government provided medical evaluation, successfully complete Wildland Fire Training, pass the Federal Wildland Firefighter Work Capacity Test, pass a drug test and clear background checks. Positions contingent upon continued grant funding.
