Southside Family Nurturing Center - School Readiness (MLC)
We are a multicultural agency and the diversity of our families reflects the many cultures of the Phillips Community. 97% of our families live at or below the Federal poverty guidelines. Our families self-identify risk factors such as mental or chemical health issues, abuse or neglect, domestic violence, or homelessness. We help stabilize families through targeted home visiting, on-site family events, and our therapeutic preschool program, providing young children the home and school support they need to develop social-emotional, pre-literacy, and kindergarten readiness skills required for school success. We plan that, with support from the VISTA, we are able to improve the quality of programming we provide to our families, and thus have a greater impact on stabilizing families and preparing children for kindergarten in the Phillips neighborhood of South Minneapolis. We are looking for a VISTA who is a motivated self-starter! Bilingual Spanish skills are an asset but not required. The candidate will need to travel within the Twin Cities metro area on occasion to meet with community partners - a car would be useful but not required. If our VISTA does not have a vehicle, we are able to provide a monthly bus pass. We can provide meals on site (breakfast and lunch) many days. *This position is part of the Minnesota Literacy Council AmeriCorps VISTA cohort. Applications reviewed on rolling basis through May 31.

Member Duties : Our VISTA will enhance our program content by developing a 2-year curriculum cycle for our twice-monthly family events - planning caregiver-child activities that focus on attachment and pre-literacy skills and quarterly “family fun” events such as a Thanksgiving meal or winter literacy party. The VISTA will also develop a 3-year curriculum for “literacy connection” kits to send home with the young children attending our therapeutic preschool program to continue children’s learning during winter, spring, and August break times, including books to keep. Our VISTA will also begin work on developing mutually-beneficial community partnerships, expanding our network of resources and also providing a pipeline for referrals to our agency, and on improving our systems for recruiting, training, and retaining volunteers. This work will be significantly expanded on in years 2 and 3 of the project.
