School District 6 Summer Feeding Program and Food Hub

Weld County School District 6 (WCSD6) is located in Greeley and Evans and has a student enrollment of 22,000 with a free-and-reduced meal rate of 66% district wide. Over the past eight years, WCSD6 has been on a mission to improve the food we are offering to our students. This has led us to kick out highly processed foods and completely revamp our food meal service which included a salad bar at every school, opening a centralized production kitchen to support the preparation of fresh meals from scratch, and sourcing local ingredients when possible. In order to continue to provide nutritious meals during summer break, WCSD6 Nutrition Services will offer the USDA’s federally-funded Summer Food Service Program for children at ten or more sites across Greeley and Evans. Lunch and breakfast will be served to any child between the ages of zero to 18 years old free of charge. Adults are welcomed to purchase breakfast for $1.80 and lunch for $3.25. The state of Colorado has been ranked in the bottom ten, lowest performing states for the USDA’s summer food service program historically. WCSD6 realizes the immense need for food assistance in our community, especially during summer months when school is not in session, and is making efforts to expand the program’s reach and intentionally target high-need neighborhoods, as well as by offering more mobile sites where we bring meals to a communal location versus asking individuals and families to come to specific sites (schools). Last year, we were able to almost double our summer feeding reach and efforts and are planning on sustaining our efforts this summer.
