VISTA S. TX Literacy Coalition Fund Development Associate

The featured outreach project of the STLC is the South Texas Reading Initiative - a book distribution program implemented as a book grant to collaborators and partners designed to place a book in the hands of children and students whose families would find it financially-challenging to provide books and print materials at home. The research shows that giving access to print materials is associated with positive behavioral, educational, and psychological outcomes. Book distribution programs provide greater access to high-quality, age-appropriate reading materials to children and students because reading is the number one predictor of school success. Other STLC projects include a partnership with The University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley to implement FESTIBA (Festival of International Books and Arts) - the largest literacy event south of San Antonio; including a professional development symposium for educators and librarians. This event also includes a Community Festival for families with the distribution of over 2,000 books. Other projects include: - Partnerships with South Texas College and Texas Southmost College for various literacy events; - Professional development sessions for literacy providers and agency partners in family literacy, financial literacy, health literacy, and workplace literacy. - Partnerships with schools, public libraries, and community-based organizations promoting literacy through family literacy festivals - Partnership with Region One educational service center to promote literacy and college readiness - Implementation of the South Texas Literacy Symposium - Financial literacy festivals and programs in the community The STLC implements at least two major fundraising events throughout the year and is involved in grant writing and other fundraising activities to meet the program needs of the organization
