Poudre Learning Center Summer Outreach VISTA Associate

The PLC is the only environmental education center in all of Weld County, Colorado. Our local districts have a high percentage of students living in poverty who do not have many opportunities to connect with natural areas and environmental centers. Many of these populations are underrepresented in STEM careers. The PLC provides a natural open space area with highly qualified, trained and seasoned environmental, experiential-based educators to support the visitors’ experience at the site. Our outreach numbers have more than tripled since 2004. Last year, our outreach connected over 26,000 educators, children, and families to their environment. District records of student achievement indicate that the schools that made repeated use of the Poudre Learning Center have higher levels of student achievement than those which did not. PLC offers interdisciplinary, inquiry-based education programs aimed at reinforcing and applying essential concepts presented in local school curricula while modeling a data-driven decision-making process. The center builds a sense of place for partner school district students, area residents and families through the construction of a water-based classroom laboratory where the Cache la Poudre’s past and present can be used to blend economics, history, culture, science, bluff geology, and aesthetics into an enhanced environmental educational experience for all. Native ecosystems for study include riparian, lacustrine (lake), wetland, and short grass steppe areas. Family and student outreach projects provide opportunities for our students that they would not otherwise receive. It’s vitally important for every child to have an opportunity to connect with place-based nature in a safe, supportive, educational atmosphere.
