Working In Neighborhoods VISTA

Since 1978, Working In Neighborhoods’ (WIN) mission has been “to empower people to make informed choices for themselves and their neighborhoods through community building, home ownership, and economic learning.” WIN works with community leaders, businesses, and most importantly, residents of the neighborhoods we serve. We have a strong reputation for developing resident leaders and supporting community-organizing efforts to increase transparency, inclusiveness and social equity in decision-making. The neighborhoods of English Woods, North Fairmount, and South Fairmount are located along the Western hillsides of the Lower Mill Creek Valley, Cincinnati’s historical industrial core. This portion of the city is packed with transportation and water management infrastructure, industrial land, older residential homes, and public housing. The racial and ethnic composition of the community is 30 percent White, 63 percent Black, and 6 percent Hispanic, with a median household income of $22,854 per year. Long-time residents are committed to their community, in spite of disinvestment that has resulted in steep population declines and vacant homes; Since 2000, a third of their residents have left and vacancy rates hover around 25 percent. WIN is working with residents to make sure they have a say in shaping the future for their communities and are part of the decision-making process in redevelopment along the Metropolitan Sewer District’s Lick Run stream daylighting project and a large-scale mixed-use project being proposed for a 45-acre public housing site. By creating safe, efficient, and affordable housing we expand opportunity for South Cumminsville residents, reduce poverty, preserve and improve the community’s housing stock and offers access to resources that help residents build equity and increase neighborhood stability. We will contribute to a greener and more sustainable future for South Cumminsville and our planet.
