Promise Neighborhood (VSA) - Initiative Foundation

Promise Neighborhood's mission is to engage local low-income families to achieve economic, educational and social goals. We are located in the community we serve and most of our work is conducted at our location, except for meetings and outreach activities in the greater Saint Cloud area. The purpose of Promise Neighborhood is to engage and empower community members and improve access to economic and leadership opportunities. Promise Neighborhood has been very successful at laying the foundation for a sustainable community-based program. We have many successes and partnerships with existing organizations, including receiving a Partners in Education award from the local school district. SE Saint Cloud, where we are located, has many transportation issues that create barriers to fresh vegetables and Sherburne County has been declared it a food desert. Over 700 kids that attend the two elementary schools in our neighborhood are eligible for free lunch and many do not have regular access to healthy meals and are sometimes in need of emergency food assistance but oftentimes that assistance does not include fresh vegetables. Many families have also expressed concern about the lack of free outdoor activities and learning opportunities available to youth, especially during the summer months. The goal of the VISTA Summer Associate project is to increase access to fresh, healthy foods to low-income individuals and families. This project aims to create educational opportunities for children and families to engage and participate in learning about planning, planting, maintaining, growing, harvesting and preparing produce to increase access to and availability of healthy foods.
