2017-18 Volunteer Iowa: EFR Prevention Associate VISTA
 
 
 
The Employee and Family Resources (EFR) Prevention Department works to address and reduce the onset of substance abuse and problem gambling by providing prevention services in Central Iowa. EFR Prevention Specialists work with youth and adults throughout the community to promote healthy lifestyles and positive choices. By engaging communities to identify and address issues, the Prevention Department collaboratively develops strategies to foster safe and healthy environments. EFR implements comprehensive prevention programming by using the six strategies that are recognized by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) as best practices in the prevention field. These strategies are Information Dissemination, Education, Environmental/Social Policy, Alternatives, Community-Based Process, and Problem Identification and Referral. The VISTA will serve as a part of Volunteer Iowa's Rural Development and Opioid AmeriCorps VISTA project. Volunteer Iowa is a state agency whose mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. VISTA members with our program have the benefit of a statewide support network of staff, Commissioners, National Service Programs, fellow AmeriCorps members and a VISTA Leader. Member Duties : The AmeriCorps VISTA member will assist in the development of data collection, data analysis and capacity building to establish a framework to reduce opioid abuse. This position will work to identify current efforts in place to address and reduce the opioid issue in Central Iowa. Focusing on capacity building, assessment and planning, this role will create a foundation that solicits volunteers to develop a community coalition to develop a strategic plan to reduce the abuse of opiates. The AmeriCorps VISTA member will be responsible for creating and maintaining a volunteer database that details individuals contacted and those expressing interest in becoming part of the community coalition. This will include, but is not limited to, calling volunteers and scheduling face-to-face meetings to detail the efforts. The VISTA member will also play an active role in utilizing technology to promote efforts.
