VISTA Assessment Coordinator

Founded in 2003, Multicultural Coalition is a small, but mighty force in supporting minority newcomers to the community through its “first-stop center”, as well as meeting the other needs of the community’s increasing diversity through citizenship classes, cultural programming, community service referrals and primary document translation. Multicultural Coalition is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit and United Way agency located in Grand Island, Nebraska, and serves anyone who can call or walk through the door. Multicultural Coalition is located in a metropolitan statistical area with the best of city life while maintaining a small town “feel” and community support. Grand Island’s population continues to grow each year with significant waves of immigrants from many different countries, making the foreign-born population 16% of the total population—with the percentage of Hispanic or Latino people increasing approximately 64% since the 2000 census. In order to help Multicultural Coalition meet the demands of the increasingly diverse population, the VISTA member will work with a team of dedicated community volunteers to assess the “under-served” and “unheard” immigrant and refugee populations. Applicants should consider this a highly rewarding opportunity to change community conditions for the immigrant and refugee communities in Grand Island because of the capacity built by VISTA member duties. If more newcomers had access to Multicultural Coalition’s programs and services, we believe their likelihood of success in accessing education, jobs and needed community services would be greatly increased. VISTA members will learn about an incredible organization and community, and play a pivotal role in the growth and continued success of the organization. Applicants applying to be a VISTA member must be committed to achieving successful outcomes for people in the service area.
