Rural Action Farm to School VISTA

The VISTA will support fresh, local food access in targeted regional schools and other institutions. Rural Action currently works with local school districts, hospitals, and other institutional markets in Athens and surrounding counties to source increasing amounts of food products from regional suppliers. The VISTA will assist in project management, volunteer management, and coordination with current Rural Action staff and partner organizations. As part of the Farm to School VISTA’s work plan, he or she will engage with community members and Rural Action staff to create written plans with targeted schools or other institutions for fresh produce sourcing. VISTA will also identify and work with new schools in rural areas to bring into meetings and plan for additional local produce procurement. VISTA will work to create new partnerships with institutions in the areas that Rural Action is not currently reaching or is not working with on a consistent level; these partnerships may include Ohio University, O’Bleness Hospital, Marietta College, and other identified institutions. The VISTA will coordinate current school produce sourcing projects with staff and volunteers at the Chesterhill Produce Auction to ensure logistics are in place to meet school needs. The VISTA will assist with grant and plan writing with Rural Action and partners as identified in all other project goals, including sourcing plans and budgets for school cafeterias, sourcing timelines and logistics for fresh product preparation with partners, local product substitution guides and calendars for cafeteria workers, and more.
