People Working Cooperatively Volunteer Engagement 2023 VISTA

As a People Working Cooperatively VISTA, you will help rebuild and expand PWC’s Volunteer Involvement Program (VIP) which helps low income home-owners remain living more independently, healthfully and safely in their own home. Each year, PWC’s professional trades staff, with support from some 2500 volunteers, provides over 9000 plumbing, electrical, HVAC, structural, roofing, accessibility, weatherization, and fall prevention services at no cost for low-income homeowners. Our volunteers play a major role in delivering these services. Prior to the pandemic, 1 in 8 services provided by PWC was completed by a volunteer. While the pandemic severely disrupted our volunteer program, in 2021 volunteers delivered over 750 services for low-income homeowners, nearly 1 in 12 of the services PWC provided. This includes raking leaves to prevent falls that can cause serious injury, cleaning gutters to prevent water damage, and helping on big projects such as constructing a wheelchair ramp, rebuilding a deteriorated front porch, or demolishing and re-pouring crumbling concrete steps. Your work will include 1) re-connecting lapsed volunteers and recruiting new volunteers with a focus on engaging volunteers who are a) reflective of the population PWC serves and b) skilled in-home services; 2) expanding volunteer opportunities at PWC; 3) improving volunteer tracking and management systems and, 4) standardizing volunteer orientation and developing new training curriculum in support of PWC’s mission to provide for the housing service needs of low-income homeowners.
