East Akron Neighborhood Development Corporation VISTA

In 2018 and 2019, EANDC and partners in East Akron will leverage programs centering on fresh food to accelerate the revitalization of the neighborhood. EANDC has been working to transform the large number of vacant parcels in the neighborhood through implementation of the East Akron Neighborhood Revitalization Plan, a collection of vacant land reuse practices (including neighborhood pathways and pocket parks, but also orchards and garden plots of various types and sizes). The pace of vacant land transformation promises to increase, as the City of Akron begins several green infrastructure projects in the neighborhood to manage stormwater runoff. In addition, EANDC has been working on a neighborhood rebranding effort to reshape the image of East Akron and enhance placemaking activities. A major component of that rebranding involves using a recurring farm market (offering food grown in the neighborhood) to create a true social and economic center for the neighborhood along the main commercial corridor. East Akron’s new capacity for raising fresh food and the new events promoting access to fresh food are driving neighborhood revitalization forward. The VISTA Member will be involved in coordinating these various efforts to ensure that the positive benefits of each enhance the work of the others: that the City’s green infrastructure projects are designed with maximum community input and in ways that enhance the productivity of vacant land; that the bi-weekly farm markets function to increase access to food, promote intergenerational mixing, and provide a platform for the neighborhood to tell its story and distribute its ‘brand’; and that all residents are aware of opportunities to involve themselves in these transformative programs.
