Community Food Initiatives Social Impact VISTA
Community Food Initiatives (CFI) is a 25 year-old social benefit organization in Athens that serves Appalachian Ohio. The mission of CFI is to foster communities where everyone has equal access to healthy, local food. CFI is the only organization in the area routinely donating thousands of pounds of local produce to food pantries, connecting regional seed savers to promote seed diversity and sustainability, managing low-cost community garden plots, supporting school gardens and teaching youth to grow food, and offering gardening and cooking workshops to adults. The community members drive our work; all of these programs come together to build a stronger community in which the citizens are empowered to grow and cook their own healthy, whole foods, in spite of poverty barriers. Community Food Initiatives’ Social Impact Coordinator VISTA will build the capacity to increase healthy food access to low-income individuals. The VISTA will focus on the following during the project’s first year: • Research public relations best practices, draft guidelines and develop Operation Manual for the Board PR Committee • Research marketing best practices and draft guidelines and develop an Operation Manual for Board PR Committee, including strategies to authentically engage with underserved individuals, and increase membership • Research and plan revenue generation strategies with each program area • Research and develop info-graphics to demonstrate the monetized social benefit of CFI’s programs to engage those we serve, funders and donors, and the region • Work with Executive Director and retailers to strategize retailing CFI merchandise • Research and write grant applications, with support and guidance from Executive Director, to build organization’s capacity
