Franklinton FoodHealth&Wellness_Episcopal Service Community

The Franklinton Food-Health-Wellness Corps is a 10-member, neighborhood-based, AmeriCorps VISTA project that builds community-food-system capacity with community organizations that serve in Columbus, Ohio's west-side neighborhood of Franklinton. Franklinton is one of Columbus' most underserved communities, and many residents are adversely impacted by various economic, environmental, and social issues. Approximately 15% of residents are unemployed, 66% of households live at or below the poverty line, and more than 50% of residents experience some level of food insecurity. The VISTA program will involve VISTA members working with a wide range of social service agencies throughout Franklinton to help build the capacity of food-health-wellness initiatives throughout the Franklinton neighborhood. Service sites include an urban farm, a hospital affiliated health and wellness center, a family housing stabilization agency, an Episcopal faith community, and a community bicycle shop. This VISTA will work directly with St. John's Episcopal Church. St. John's has served the Franklinton neighborhood for over 100 years bringing hope and healing to the community. They are rooted in the rich tradition of the Episcopal Church and strive to creatively move into the future. We take seriously our fundamental call to reconciliation through building relationships with our neighbors and working for justice in our community. Member will work with the Episcopal Community to promote community food security by helping to develop capacity with existing community meals. Member will also contribute to Asset Based Community Development Efforts started by previous VISTA members, and will help build connections between St. John's Growing Place Garden, Franklinton Gardens and Avondale Elementary School.
