Franklinton FoodHealth&Wellness_Farm Produce Distribution

The Franklinton Food-Health-Wellness Corps is a 10-member, neighborhood-based, AmeriCorps VISTA project that builds community-food-system capacity with community organizations that serve in Columbus, Ohio's west-side neighborhood of Franklinton. Franklinton is one of Columbus' most underserved communities, and many residents are adversely impacted by various economic, environmental, and social issues. Approximately 15% of residents are unemployed, 66% of households live at or below the poverty line, and more than 50% of residents experience some level of food insecurity. The VISTA program will involve VISTA members working with a wide range of social service agencies throughout Franklinton to help build the capacity of food-health-wellness initiatives throughout the Franklinton neighborhood. Service sites include an urban farm, a hospital affiliated health and wellness center, a family housing stabilization agency, an Episcopal faith community, and a community bicycle shop. The Produce Distribution VISTA will work to develop distribution programs for produce grown by the Franklinton Gardens (FG) Urban Farm. Distribution scope will include both the Franklinton neighborhood, and markets throughout Greater Columbus. VISTA member will work with the FG staff to build upon FG’s existing food distribution plan that involves farmers markets, and a neighborhood CSA and produce delivery service. VISTA member will be responsible for working with the FG Farm manager and other staff to determine how and when farm produce will be distributed. Member will also work with Executive Director and fundraising team to inform fundraising plans for subsidized food distribution efforts in the neighborhood. Development and initial management of an online mobile market storefront is a key priority.
