Franklinton FoodHealth&Wellness_Homeless Families Foundation

The Franklinton Food-Health-Wellness Corps is a 10-member, neighborhood-based, AmeriCorps VISTA project that builds community-food-system capacity with community organizations that serve in Columbus, Ohio's west-side neighborhood of Franklinton. Franklinton is one of Columbus' most underserved communities, and many residents are adversely impacted by various economic, environmental, and social issues. Approximately 15% of residents are unemployed, 66% of households live at or below the poverty line, and more than 50% of residents experience some level of food insecurity. The VISTA program will involve VISTA members working with a wide range of social service agencies throughout Franklinton to help build the capacity of food-health-wellness initiatives throughout the Franklinton neighborhood. Service sites include an urban farm, a hospital affiliated health and wellness center, a family housing stabilization agency, an Episcopal faith community, and a community bicycle shop. This VISTA will work with the Homeless Families Foundation (HFF), whose mission is to educate and nurture children while empowering families to achieve stable housing and self sufficiency.  The HFF provides case management services to families living in homeless shelters, an afterschool and summer program and a Pre-K program.  These programs work together to help families build long term housing stability. The HFF VISTA will address the issue of food security with our families. Member activities will include: establishing a gardening program for students in the after-school program; work with Franklinton Gardens to promote their neighborhood food distribution program; and develop a low cost food sourcing plan for food served and given to families at HFF.The ideal candidate will be community focused, a self- starter, have the ability to interact with children, youth and adults, able to work on multiple projects concurrently,  and be willing to take direction from several different people.
