Franklinton FoodHealth&Wellness_Healthy Living Center

The Franklinton Food-Health-Wellness Corps is a 10-member, neighborhood-based, AmeriCorps VISTA project that builds community-food-system capacity with community organizations that serve in Columbus, Ohio's west-side neighborhood of Franklinton. Franklinton is one of Columbus' most underserved communities, and many residents are adversely impacted by various economic, environmental, and social issues. Approximately 15% of residents are unemployed, 66% of households live at or below the poverty line, and more than 50% of residents experience some level of food insecurity. The VISTA program will involve VISTA members working with a wide range of social service agencies throughout Franklinton to help build the capacity of food-health-wellness initiatives throughout the Franklinton neighborhood. Service sites include an urban farm, a hospital affiliated health and wellness center, a family housing stabilization agency, an Episcopal faith community, and a community bicycle shop. The Mount Carmel Healthy Living Center (HLC) provides holistic health and wellness services and community resources to the city of Columbus, Ohio empowering and equipping each individual to embrace long-term health behavior changes. Franklinton is an empowerment-centered community with a collaborative spirit. The HLC has developed and hosted programs which include stress management, yoga, mindfulness, zumba, healthy cooking/nutrition, and pregnancy/parenting. The HLC Americorps VISTA will work on: Enhancing capacity for volunteer management/involvement; Strengthening inter-organizational partnerships; Assisting in operations and logistics; Developing improved measurable outcomes; Enhancing program promotion and outreach methods. Member Duties : This VISTA position will work directly with the Mount Carmel Healthy Living Center staff to strengthen and develop partnerships and collaboration with Franklinton Gardens, Gladden Community House and other Franklinton agencies. The goal for this VISTA will be to identify how existing partnerships can be made more concrete and sustainable They will also identify opportunities for new collaborations to develop initiatives that increase participation in activities that promote healthy living. Additionally this VISTA will assist with internal capacity enhancement of the Healthy Living Center as it concerns volunteer management, organizational operations and logistics, program promotion and outreach.
