Summer Reads - Caledonia, MN

As Caledonia Public Schools strives to provide the best education to empower all learners to thrive in our changing world, we hope to collaborate with as many partners as possible to support student excitement for learning. With a free and reduced lunch population of 21.5% of our 290 students and a free lunch offered to all children under 18 on our elementary site, our summer literacy program will be aiding students in poverty through relationships, nutrition, and a reduction of the “summer slide” – the loss of learning that occurs over the summer, especially those who are low income. We also have a goal to make learning more hands-on and interactive for the students. We have a reading and social/emotional garden with a calming walking path and reading stones for students to enjoy the outdoors and literacy simultaneously. We are partnering with the Caledonia Public Library’s summer reading program so that students will experience literacy enrichment throughout the community. The library will also provide literacy enrichment for students and opportunities for parents to strengthen their children’s literacy skills at home. Our goal is to bring literacy to life. We want to create literacy experiences for students that help them experience curiosity and enjoyment with reading. Our programming will give VISTAs transformational experiences including tutoring, library promotion, parent education, book clubs, reader’s theatre, and other literacy enrichment activities that prove to build their community leadership skills. These positions are part of the Summer Reads program of the Minnesota Literacy Council. Summer Reads AmeriCorps VISTAs provide quality tutoring and literacy enrichment opportunities for K-3rd grade students, while developing their own professional skills. Two positions available, applications reviewed on a rolling basis until all positions are filled, through April 28. See www.mnliteracy.org/volunteers/vista/summer-reads-vista for more information.
