Summer Reads - Caledonia, MN (LitMN)

Caledonia Public Schools strives to provide the best education to empower all learners to thrive in our changing world, Caledonia Elementary collaborates with as many partners as possible to support student excitement for learning. With a free and reduced lunch population of 30% of our 299 students, and a free lunch offered to all children under 18 at our elementary site, our summer literacy program will be aiding students in poverty through relationships, nutrition, and a reduction of the “summer slide” – the loss of learning that occurs over the summer, especially for those who are low income. Our goal is to make learning more hands-on and interactive for the students. We have a reading and social/emotional garden with a calming walking path and reading stones for students to enjoy the outdoors and literacy simultaneously. We are partnering with the Caledonia Public Library’s summer reading program so that students will experience literacy enrichment throughout the community. The library will also provide literacy enrichment for students and opportunities for parents to strengthen their children’s literacy skills at home. *Positions are part of Literacy Minnesota’s Summer Reads program, which trains and places about 60 AmeriCorps VISTA members as K-5 children’s literacy mentors in schools, libraries and out-of-school-time programs. About half of members serve outside the Twin Cities metro.
