MDCCC UMBC-BCCC Refugee Youth Project’s College JUMP

Our project will implement College JUMP (Journey Upward Mentoring Program), a mentoring program that matches high school juniors and seniors from the BCCC Refugee Youth Project with college student volunteers from UMBC. Many young refugees and their families are resettled in Baltimore City and County from Burma, Bhutan, Iraq, Eritrea, and Congo, and are unfamiliar with the college application process. UMBC mentors will serve as role models and guides for refugee students by meeting with them on a weekly basis, providing much-needed advice and resource access for the youth. By engaging both students in workshops and college readiness activities, this partnership between UMBC and the Refugee Youth Project aims to increase the number of refugee youth that successfully enroll in two and four-year institutions. Ultimately, we hope to increase the number of refugee students that complete post-secondary degrees.
