MDCCC Towson University America Reads/America Counts

The MDCCC AmeriCorps VISTA serving at Towson University will address the need of Baltimore City middle school and elementary school students to achieve grade level learning in mathematics and language arts by combining TU’s America Counts program and the “TUTORS” (America Reads) program into an integrated and larger America Reads/America Counts program. In order to increase academic achievement in lower-income youth, the MDCCC AmeriCorps VISTA serving at Towson University will restructure and redevelop these separate programs into a centralized America Reads & America Counts program that can then be expanded to serve additional elementary and middle schools students in the area. This project will be focused on serving children from low-income families in Baltimore City. The MDCCC AmeriCorps VISTA serving at Towson University will play an active role in implementing all aspects of the project, including transitioning the existing programs from the Math Department (America Counts) and the Financial Aid Office (America Reads/TUTORS program), reinvigorating both programs, and outreaching to new elementary and middle schools to expand the program.
