College Health Corps, University of Minnesota Rochester

The University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR), offers an undergraduate health science program, and in 2016, celebrated its 10-year anniversary. UMR serves as a conduit and catalyst for leveraging intellectual and economic resources through signature academic, research, and public engagement programs. UMR supports the Health CORE (HC) Living Learning Community (LLC) for low-income students of color. CORE is an acronym for Community of Respect and Empowerment. Beyond this LLC, approximately 35% of the UMR students are Pell grant recipients. Generally, low-income, first-generation, college students of color tend to struggle the most in developing a sense of belonging as they enter college. We aim to improve these students’ wellness and indirectly their resilience as students. The VISTA will work together with key UMR colleagues to develop and implement a wellness program for the HCLLC with a goal to influence the community more broadly. The VISTA would also help with the development of a service-learning program to connect the LLC with community members through Family Service Rochester (FSR). FSR promotes the well-being of low-income senior citizens by providing companionship and help in their homes and will partner with UMR students to specifically enhance services for older adults of color. ---This project is part of the College Health Corps (CHC) VISTA Program, operated by Minnesota Campus Compact. The CHC increases low-income individuals’ access to health care, health education, food, and basic needs through capacity building projects, including partnerships between higher education and community based organizations. Professional development focuses on health equity, the social determinants of health, and effective partnership development. --- ***Interviews will occur on a rolling basis. Preference given to candidates who apply early. Candidates must also email a resume and cover letter.***

Member Duties : While working closely with the UMR Health CORE Living Learning Community and their leadership, the VISTA will work alongside health and wellness and residential life staff to create a sustainable model for a community of wellness. The HCLLC meets regularly and students are responsible for fulfilling various obligations throughout the semester. The VISTA will help to develop ongoing programs, in collaboration with other UMR colleagues that focus on diet, nutrition, exercise, mindfulness, physical and emotional wellbeing for low-income and underrepresented students, most of whom participate in the living learning community. The VISTA will build connections with a local community organization and develop opportunities for the students to have meaningful engagement with the older adults of color in Rochester to enhance their health and wellness.
