MDCCC Justice for Juniors

The Justice for Juniors @ CUA mentoring program is focused on ethical dialogue, community building, workforce development, and building preparatory skills for life and college. The MDCCC AmeriCorps VISTA project will help youth currently in the Youth Services Center and those who have moved from the Youth Services Center into transitional housing. The goal of this program is to address the growing opportunity gap in DC by giving the support and resources needed for the youth in transition to take control of their future. The youth will have the opportunity to build relationships as well life skills to give them access to opportunities that can reduce the likelihood of recidivism. The MDCCC AmeriCorps VISTA will enhance our existing partnership with Justice for Juniors, in collaboration with the Youth Services Center, as well as create a new mentoring program for youth at CUA. The program will help to build and improve sustainability for the Justice for Juniors organization by creating a website and organizational resources. The MDCCC AmeriCorps VISTA will help implement an improved, comprehensive training of volunteers, create curriculum with input from the youth being served, and design resources for reflection and discussion for all participants. We expect the following short-term outcomes with long-term effects: - Youths will be able to articulate their own personal goals for their future and build the skills necessary to achieve these goals. - Youths will build positive relationships and engage in dialogue with their mentors, participating in hands-on learning about college from students currently working toward their college degrees. - Youth will strengthen their communication and literacy, as well as building successful decision-making and time-management skills. - With the program being housed at the university, the youth will be exposed to higher education, and receive an introductory curriculum to various professions for workforce development.
