NC Afterschool Corps VISTA

The NC Afterschool Corps will build the capacity of afterschool and expanded learning programs that serve low-income children, while strengthening these programs’ connection to local colleges and universities. NC Afterschool Corps members will work to recruit and train afterschool volunteers, increase funding and resources to these programs, and expand local awareness of the value of afterschool. Corps members will also enhance civic and community engagement by implementing “Design for Change” afterschool programming, a project-based curriculum that empowers young people to solve local programs through design-thinking and action. Selected candidates must report to their service placement site on August 19, 2019. The NC Afterschool Corps is an AmeriCorps VISTA project sponsored by North Carolina Campus Compact. North Carolina Campus Compact is a collaborative network of colleges and universities committed to educating students for civic and social responsibility, partnering with communities for positive change, and strengthening democracy. The NC Campus Compact state office -- located at Elon University -- fosters connections between campuses, shares best practice information and resources, recognizes outstanding work, and champions civic and community engagement in higher education. VISTA Site Locations Include: High Point, NC - Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater High Point and High Point LEAP Brevard, NC - Brevard College Greenville, NC - East Carolina University Pembroke, NC - Lumbee Tribe of NC Boys and Girls Clubs Raliegh, NC - NC State University Juntos Program Asheville, NC - UNC Asheville Marvelous Math Club

Member Duties : Assess community and agency needs and identify assets • Recruit and train volunteers • Develop systems for volunteer coordination• Create policies and procedures that increase agency effectiveness • Support citizen and student leadership and participation in service • Seek new resources through fund-raising and grant-writing • Facilitate community-based research and co-curricular opportunities that support communities • Create publicity and outreach materials • Coordinate afterschool awareness events and national day of service events• Promote AmeriCorps, VISTA, and national service
