Boy Scouts - Volunteer Recruitment Specialist

The Overland Trails Council of the Boy Scouts of America is a family and neighborhood centered program designed to instill values and develop character in a young person. The Overland Trails Council recruits and train volunteers to administer local programs of Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Venturing and Exploring. The Overland Trails Council, headquartered in Grand Island, NE, serves 44 counties in central and western Nebraska. In 2016, the Overland Trails council served over 3,000 young people and over 950 in the Grand Island area. Despite the success of the program the council has not made significant progress in the Hispanic and other cultures. The VISTA member will create and implement a volunteer recruitment plan to enable Boys Scouts of America Overland Trails Council (BSA) to serve a greater number of diverse families in successful long-term scouting programs. This initiative would serve low-income families, specifically focusing on increasing engagement with Hispanic and other diverse populations who are not equally represented in the population of current program participants. The request to serve more Hispanic or Latino scouts in traditional units stems from the capacity to serve older boys that the afterschool program does not serve, but also to increase the time and exposure the scouts have to positive leadership skills. With the data about positive, long-lasting mentorship roles, BSA aims to accomplish character development, citizenship training and physical and mental fitness, which are paramount to developing healthy kids with productive futures. The BSA program also provides the stability and leadership children need to experience in order to thrive and rise above their situation. engage both Hispanic leaders and Hispanic families in the scouting program.

Member Duties : The VISTA member will become familiar with the BSA organization and the current recruitment process. The VISTA member will identify strategies to recruit and retain a diverse group of volunteers to serve as unit leaders by partnering with Hispanic-serving organizations to engage both Hispanic leaders and Hispanic families in the scouting program. The VISTA member will also research best practices for recruiting strategies with other BSA councils who serve diverse populations. Based on this research, the VISTA member will present recommendations for recruitment strategies that aim to increase diversity in the BSA footprint. The VISTA member will implement the recruitment plan to engage unit leaders over the summer months and then in September will shift to engagement of family participants. The VISTA member will evaluate the effectiveness of the new recruitment plan and make modifications as he or she completes the recruitment plan for 2018.
