Resource Development

Founded in 1947, Heartland United Way is a fundraising and community impact organization that aims to improve lives and create possibilities in Hall, Hamilton, Howard and Merrick Counties in Nebraska. We achieve our mission through advocacy, leadership and support for nonprofit organizations that help individuals and families gain access to educational, economic and health opportunities. We work with 21 UW Community Partners to serve 25,000 people annually. Heartland United Way is located in Grand Island, Nebraska, a metropolitan statistical area with the best of city life while maintaining a small town “feel” and community support. The city of Grand Island suffers a higher poverty rate than the surrounding communities and the state overall. Grand Island’s poverty rate is 17%, compared to the state average of 12.6% (American Community Surveys 2015). When Grand Island’s children are factored into the poverty data, 30.7% of related children six and under are in poverty, compared to the state average of 19.6%. Because Heartland United Way seeks educational opportunities, healthy communities and financial stability for all people living in the four-county area, we are recruiting for a VISTA member to help us develop projects and programs to address targeted community issues. The VISTA member will work collaboratively to design and implement projects that address community issues. The VISTA member will bolster community resources and support for targeted program and projects. Heartland United Way’s goal is to ensure the continuance of successfully implemented programs. A VISTA member will walk away from this position with an incredible knowledge of community collaborations, grant writing, volunteer engagement and program implementation. Applicants applying to be a VISTA member must be committed to achieving successful outcomes for people in the service area.
