Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota is a private, national university offering undergraduate, bachelor completion, masters’ and doctoral degrees. The University was founded in 1912 by Bishop Patrick R. Heffron and is affiliated with the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Roman Catholic. Saint Mary’s currently enrolls 5900 students delivering education on campuses in the Twin Cities, Winona, Rochester and on line. Key programming related to this VISTA project includes our First Generation Initiative and Count Down to College programs offering access to education for low income populations and a history of collaboration with Winona Volunteer Services providing emergency food to Winona community. The core program goal for VISTA is to assist in creating and coordinating a large, long-term sustainable garden on the Saint Mary’s Winona campus. Produce from the garden would directly alleviate long term hunger by providing a sustainable sources of emergency food to be distributed to low-income community members through Winona Volunteer Services. This garden will also serve as vehicle for nutritional health educational programs. ---This project is part of the College Health Corps (CHC) VISTA Program, operated by Minnesota Campus Compact. The CHC increases low-income individuals’ access to health care, health education, food, and basic needs through capacity building projects, including partnerships between higher education and community based organizations. Professional development focuses on health equity, the social determinants of health, and effective partnership development. --- ***Interviews will occur on a rolling basis. Preference given to candidates who apply early. Candidates must also email a resume and cover letter.***

Member Duties : Secure partners for recruitment of individuals to establish and maintain the garden. Secure media partners for awareness of program and resources available in the community. Develop student volunteer management system in collaboration with faculty and staff. Develop procedural guide for recruitment, training and oversight of volunteers. Develop procedural guide for composting practices and materials. Develop curriculum on land stewardship, gardening, and composting. Develop and conduct a needs assessment (pre and post). Research materials for delivery of holistic health and wellness information sensitive to cultural needs. Develop curriculum for three workshops on gardening, healthy living and nutrition. Secure partners to mentor and teach students related to gardening, food safety and healthy lifestyles. Develop curriculum and train-the-trainer manuals for mentoring participants on sustainable gardening and health behaviors.
