Ashtabula County Community Action Agency VISTA

The Strong Foundations, Successful Futures-Community Learning Center (CLC) is currently an initiative with the Ashtabula Area City School (AACS), Ohio and is being explored for expansion into other school districts. Ashtabula County Community Action Agency (ACCAA) is the lead entity in the partnership and aligns closely with the goals for student achievement and skills attainment, to help people become self-sufficient and improve their quality of life. Developed as a means of enhancing student performance as well as creating a platform for life-long learning and success, the CLC uses the school and/or its facilities as a hub to connect the community and the school. The CLC at AACS, now called the Dragon Empowerment Center (DEC), offers social, health, education, recreational and enrichment activities, support services, and programs. Services that remove barriers, connect students and families to resources, and provide for basic needs. There are many outside factors that impact a student’s ability to come to school “ready-to-learn”. Despite working very hard, many area families are struggling to make ends meet and have some significant basic needs that go unmet. For example in Ashtabula nearly half of all children live at or below the poverty rate and the school qualifies at one hundred percent (100%) free school lunch. Current activities at the DEC include food bags, clothing banks, tutoring, connections to resources, enrichment activities, financial assistance for vision services, mental and behavioral health services, and -new-onsite dental services. Establishing additional CLC’s will require doing a needs assessment and launching a community engagement effort to include all stakeholders, as well as creating an evaluation process for services. Our continued efforts will be to further connect our various communities and their resources to the schools, and create services that aid students and families to move forward successfully.
