Arthur Morgan Local Foods Summer Associate 2

McCain Acres is a newly established urban farm and education center, currently being developed within the parameters of a USDA Community Food Project Grant, in cooperation with The Arthur Morgan Institute for Community Solutions and Central State University Extension Service. It is located within a southwest neighborhood in Springfield, Ohio, the southern half of the city losing its last full-service grocery store in March of 2020. The southern half of the city contains residents that live in a significant degree of poverty (25% overall, approaching 49% in isolated areas). Residents are primarily African American, with a mix of Latino and Caucasian. The site will be purchased within the parameters of this grant, so holds promise for being dedicated to long term use in improving access to fresh food for this population. Our current project focus is threefold: development of the site to support significant food production, including vegetables, fruit, eggs, and honey; increasing fresh food access in both quantity, variety, and quality for neighborhood residents; and food, nutrition, agriculture, and ag business education for ages of participants. Collaborations with local non-profits, Central State University Extension, local city schools, and a neighborhood advisory group are facilitating broad exposure and reach of this project, as well as its belonging to the larger regional outreach programming implemented by Community Solutions. Ongoing interest exists to include the development of a springboard for training and support for beginning farmers.
