Montana has a significant opportunity to move its neediest citizens out of generational poverty if the Governor's challenge to increase Montana's college completion rate to 60% by 2025 is aggressively pursued. Currently the rate of completion of a postsecondary degree or certificate stands at 40%. Additionally, Montana communities have significant need for volunteers, especially those who make a longer-term commitment to serve. Our community lacks affordable opportunities for school aged children to be able to engage in recreational activities, structured and non-structured, and experience camp on a college campus. Campus recreation Youth camps are designed to foster a child’s sense of autonomy while exploring all forms of recreation. In doing so, we hope to foster a life-long love for recreation and the University of Montana in the youth of our community. Along with or Camp’s desire to encourage a sense of autonomy in children, with the implementation of physical activity, we strongly encourage the development of the children’s cognitive abilities. Time and time again physical activity in children has been correlated with increased cognitive abilities. Campus Recreation Youth Camp’s give the opportunity to college student AmeriCorps members who have a strong desire and willingness to work with and mentor children a chance to leave their imprint on lives of campers. Through mentoring and engaging youth in activities they have a chance to make a meaningful and lasting impact on student’s lives with the service they provide them with. They will incorporate these activities to provide the opportunity for mentors to teach the campers a special skill they acquired in their life or learned for the purpose of camp such as yoga or knot tying.
