Team Members will develop one-on-one mentoring relationships with twenty high school students to help to encourage high school completion because only 39% of Poplar students’ graduate high school. They will engage high school students in activities at Fork Peck Community College on a regular basis to give them experience in a higher education environment and mentoring opportunities. The members will facilitate activities with youth to cultivate a community bringing college students and high school students together for near peer mentoring while they learn about how to maintain a garden and work to understand of sustainable living and nutrition. They will work to support college access by connecting the FPCC community gardening initiative to Poplar High School students to provide healthier after school activities to Poplar youth and their families. They will assist with planning and implementing a new after school programming in the Juvenile Detention Center where they will mentor youth. The Team Members will work to build a strong team with the 8-12th grade youth through organized team building and ice breaker activities at all events. A calendar will be developed to help college students and high school students know about activities to engage in with maintaining the garden and community outreach events. Team members will help outline curriculum together with high school and FPCC college students for FPCC members and high school mentees to teach gardening and health eating practices to elementary and middle school students. They will organize a committee of high school and FPCC students around the idea of curriculum design. Help implement curriculum design meetings with high school and FPCC students and reach out to Poplar elementary and middle schools with gardening and nutrition focused curriculum.
