*MTCC AmeriCorps Team Member-Watershed Education Network

Missoula’s drinking water depends on the pristine aquifer and the health of the Clark Fork River. By advancing water education activities, school field trip and science expansion for middle school and high school students, college pursuits and career readiness in natural resource fields. These all lead to better-informed, watershed literate citizens. Team members will work to expand WEN’s water education lessons to best meet current science teaching standards. Team Members will engage underserved and low income students with WEN’s Watershed Education Network programs in School Stream Monitoring Program (SSMP); provide pre- and post- surveys on knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors; review SSMP content and activities for best teaching practices and meeting Missoula County Public School science standards. They will facilitate the revised SSMP lessons in action with summer program paying attention to successes and needs for revision and engage youth in fun and educational activities. Team Members will work to encourage higher participation of more classes in water education programs, by correlating water lessons and activities to Next Generation Science Standards. Work to expand these educational opportunities by aligning WEN’s current School Stream Monitoring Program (SSMP) to NGSS to help engage teachers and classes in water education programs. Ensure more students have a quality experience in place-based education with water resource topics. Team Members will present Next Generation Science Standards to middle school and high school classes and engage the youth in water education activities and fieldtrip experiences as well as assist with WEN’s class lessons, and fieldtrip outlines/scripts and engage youth in these activities increasing their understanding of the science of water.
