Tribal VISTA: Bishop Paiute Tribe

**Preference given to individuals who are Native of the Bishop Paiute Tribe.** Today, for many tribes, access to traditional food resources is influenced by relationships with federal and state agencies, privatization of land, and by climatic change. Ecological stress points related to climate are likely to increasingly affect relationships with traditional foods, including: access, availability, harvesting, and the ability to store, process, and use traditional foods. The VISTA member will primarily work with the Bishop Paiute Tribe’s Food Sovereignty Program (FSP) to strengthen food availability, food accessibility, food utilization, and food systems stability – all of which are directly related to the Tribe’s food security issues and may increasingly be affected by climate change. The member will work with the current FSP staff, interns and volunteers to provide community members with: • Capacity building workshops that promote climate appropriate, regenerative agriculture practices • Land stewardship partnerships to: increase soil health, suppress weeds, and establish geophyte food plants • Access to healthy and local foods with an emphasis on engagement with traditional foods • Expand reach and engagement with bio-regional adaptation of seeds and plants • Support gardens of Elders in the community who want to participate in bio-regional seed initiatives • Documentation of existing food resources including multi-generation fruit trees and traditional foods • Engagement via hands-on garden-based activities that foster skills and pride around local food • Knowledge of cooking and nutrition to provide the community with information to make healthy choices Reviewing applications on a rolling basis; please apply soon.

Member Duties : The VISTA will directly support the work of the Tribe’s FSP in partnership with Bishop Elementary School, the Bishop Tribe’s Head Start Program, and the two FSP gardens. The VISTA will increase collaboration between garden sites, strengthening local food and educational efforts, and will be involved directly with inspiring the next generation of food activists. Through garden lessons, workshops and outreach, the service member will continue to encourage cross-generational dialogue and knowledge-sharing regarding sustainable food production, traditional foods, and land stewardship. The VISTA will work to strengthen the FSP seed initiatives and increase collaboration with the Natural Resource program to integrate land management with food sovereignty, through soil remediation in restoration plots to both suppress invasive plant populations and encourages traditional food plants with a focus on geophyte cultivation.
